There is a wide choice of bases. Depending on the piece of sculpture, a base can be of wood, stone or even be included in the casting. My preference is stone, and my favourite is Hornton Stone – Blue Hornton, quarried in Gloucestershire. We take great care to position the piece upon the base, ensuring its creative display.
A couple of my clients have shown preference to position the finished sculpture on a plinth. These are generally made of wood but they can also be stone or even with one of my clients, be built strategically in to their home. We are always prepared to design an appropriate plinth to a specification made by the Client. This can be discussed upon order.
The choice of base will depend on the sculptured piece’s story. Owls can be presented on real wood or sculpted. I favour stone which can be anything, again carefully chosen to best enhance the piece. I have used Cotswold stone, (limestone and sandstone), granite, igneous stone and Perspex.
My most favourite is the Blue Hornton stone. This was a firm choice of Henry Moore as well, but I feel the nature of the stone always enhances the piece that it presents to the viewer. It is very special as it is quarried near Banbury in England and is in scarce supply. I feel honoured to be able to offer my clients a piece of Hornton Stone – adding to the narrative of what it presents to the viewer.
